Phoenix Comicon 2017 - Day 3
June 14, 2017 04:25 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
Day 3 was the best of the three days we spent at Phoenix Comicon. This was the only day we went in costume as Captain Malcolm Reynolds and Kaylee Frye of Firefly, so it took us a tad longer to get ready. Sadly my husband wasn’t able to carry his prop gun, but at least I was able to take my parasol, which I’d previously thought would be disallowed, as they originally said no props of any kind. We headed to the convention center around 11 am again, and this time it only took about fifteen minutes to get inside. It appeared that lessons were learned from Friday, and they’d gotten all the kinks worked out of the security situation to make the lines flow much faster.

Phoenix Comicon 2017 - Day 1
June 10, 2017 07:05 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
To celebrate our 23rd anniversary, my husband and I attended Phoenix Comicon for the first time. Even though we’re local, we decided to stay in a hotel two blocks from the Phoenix Convention Center where it’s held, rather than making the thirty-five mile round-trip drive back and forth every day. That also made it feel more like a real vacation. I’m not sure why it took two geeks like us so long to give this a try, but… there you have it.:-) Better late than never, I always say. Since it was out first Con, things didn’t always go entirely as planned, but we learned a few things along the way that will help if we go back again, which I’m sure we will.

Romance Novel Convention 2015 -- Day 1
July 1, 2015 02:57 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
Well, I'm safely back home in Phoenix after spending an exciting week in Las Vegas, attending Romance Novel Convention 2015. This has been my favorite RNCon so far. I can't even begin to tell you how much fun I had there and how many amazing memories I've brought home with me to cherish, but I'm going to try, starting with Day 1.
Our view of the High Roller from the tiny balcony of our hotel room at Harrah's Las Vegas.

Friday Funnies 1-9-15

Since Nathan Fillion was my pick for Hump Day Hunk this week, this seemed an entirely appropriate choice for my Friday Funny. The picture and quote are from one of my favorite Firefly episodes "Our Mrs. Reynolds." Hope it give you a laugh.

Hump Day Hunks -- Nathan Fillion
January 7, 2015 06:36 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
I've been a fan of today's Hump Day Hunk since he played Joey Buchanan on One Life to Live. It's been years since I watched that soap, but I seem to recall the character being charming, intrepid, and incorrigible, not unlike his portrayer appears to be in real life. From there, he went on to play a number of different characters, including the evil priest, Caleb, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This brought him to the attention of the show's creator, Joss Whedon, who later cast him as the roguish and somewhat tortured space cowboy/ship's captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly, a role which he later reprised in the feature film, Serenity, and which earned him a cult fan following among Browncoats (fans of the show). From there, he played a variety of smaller but memorable roles such as Dr. Jim Pomatter in the indie film, Waitress, Dr. Adam Mayfair on Deperate Housewives, and Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. In 2009, he landed the title role of another roguish and charming character, mystery writer Richard Castle on the crime drama, Castle, which is still currently airing new episodes.

Romance Novel Convention -- Day 2
July 17, 2014 12:42 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
Day 2 of the Romance Novel Convention was a bit busier for me. Hubs went down early to get the schedule to find out when he was teaching his classes. He ended up teaching his class What You Need to Know to Talk to a Web Designer that morning. It was small, but he really enjoyed teaching it and felt like those attending got a lot out of it. While he was busy with that, I attended Victoria Danann's class on Indie Writing As a Business. Much like with Angela Knight's class the day before, Victoria said this was a 20-30 hour course that she'd pared down to only one hour, but it was an hour jam-packed with great information on marketing and promoting books.

Here's a fun picture to put a smile on your face to start the weekend. Since I talked about my love for Firefly on Tuesday, I couldn't resist making this my first Friday Funny. Gotta love Kaylee Frye, and her adoration of strawberries. This shot comes from "Shindig" my all-time favorite Firefly episode. Apologies to my non-Browncoat readers if you don't get it, but like I said before, what are you waiting for? Give it a try.

TV Tuesday -- Firefly
June 17, 2014 03:06 PM Posted by juliannadouglas
Another wonderful storytelling medium and one of my other big hobbies is television. Once I find shows and characters I like, I just can't get enough of them. I probably watch way too many TV shows, which is why, much like with movies, I'm rarely up to date on any of them. With the popularity and availability of TV on DVD and Netflix, I also enjoy rewatching old favorites and discovering new-to-me shows as well. My apologies in advance for potentially discussing a particular show or episode my readers may have watched a long time ago, but if I tried to stay up to date on all the shows I love, I'd never have time for writing. Not to mention, perhaps I can stir up some fond memories for you or help you discover a show you've never seen before (in the event that might be the case, I'll try not to be too spoilerish).
