I didn’t read very many books in August, but those I did read were all winners. However, one stood out among the rest. It’s the seventh volume of a long-running, epic, romantic series that I first discovered nearly twenty-five years ago. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been following Jamie and Claire’s story for this long, and now that I’ve named the main characters, I’m sure most hard-core romance readers know exactly what series I’m talking about. This couple have been through so many adventures and hardships, joys and sorrows, and yet they’re still together and still experiencing all that life (or perhaps I should say the author :-) ) has thrown at them. In this installment, they’re trying to avoid the American Revolution, partly as a matter of survival and partly so that Jamie doesn’t risk facing his own son, a British officer, across a battlefield. But as is often the case in this series, fate has other plans in store for them, and they end committing piracy before winding up in a couple of the more significant battles of the war, then finally reaching their original goal, a return to Scotland.
This book isn’t just all about Jamie and Claire, though. Their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their kids are dealing with their own life problems in a completely different time line that ends up intersecting with the past once again. Jamie’s son, William, proves himself to be as honorable as both of his fathers while fighting for the British cause, after having a couple of misadventures first. Along the way he meets, Ian, a man he doesn’t know is really his cousin, while Ian struggles to make sense of his broken marriage and rediscovers love with a new woman. That woman, Rachel and her brother, Denny, a pair of Quakers, lend their skills to healing the war wounded, while Lord John investigates some potential spy activity and tries to save his dying nephew.
As you can probably tell, with action taking place in two different time lines and on two different continents, there’s a lot going in this book to keep the reader on their toes. The story starts off a bit slow, but gradually progresses to more exciting events, propelling it into a truly jaw-dropping ending on multiple fronts, while leaving lots of tantalizing little threads left hanging to tease the reader into the next book. It never ceases to amaze me how the author always deftly weaves every detail together into a cohesive whole with no point being a throwaway moment. These books never fail to be beautifully written and meticulously plotted, leaving me in awe. That’s why I’m naming Diana Gabaldon’s An Echo in the Bone as my August Book of the Month. If you enjoy epic historical fiction with a time travel subplot and a deep sense of romance, then you should definitely give this book a try.
