In February, I only had two romance reads that I rated five stars. My enjoyment of both was nearly equal, so I had a hard time choosing my favorite. After much deliberation, I finally settled on a historical romance by one of my favorite authors. In it, we have a grieving widow paired with her dead husband’s friend, who is a rake of the first order. The desire she thought had died with her husband has been stoked by her latest book club read, a salacious memoir that has the ton all abuzz, and she couldn’t be more surprised to find this old friend starring in her literary induced fantasies. He has lusted after her from afar for years, and now finally has the opportunity to find out if she could feel the same way. Both of them enter the relationship thinking it will be nothing more than a casual affair, but soon discover their emotions run much deeper. But it takes a murderer bent on killing all the hero’s past lovers to spur his declaration of love.
Carolyn has been widowed for three years and misses her husband so deeply, she’s had a hard time going on living. It was only at her sister's prodding that she attended a house party where she reconnected with her husband's old friend, Daniel. She finds him attractive and intriguing, but because of his reputation as a rogue, she keeps things between them purely platonic until her book club selection makes her begin to long again for the carnal pleasures she shared with her husband. When Daniel proposes they become lovers, she’s sorely tempted, but she isn’t sure she can engage in a casual affair without her heart becoming involved as well. I thought Carolyn was the perfect mixture of sugar and spice. There’s a sweetness about her in her kind and calm demeanor, but with Daniel, she’s able to release a deeply passionate side she didn’t realize existed. I also found it rather refreshing to have a widowed character who is still in love with their spouse instead of one who had a terrible marriage. She may not think her heart is open to love when she begins her affair with Daniel, but she’s more ready for the possibility than she knows.
Daniel has been enamored of Carolyn for years, but kept his distance out of respect for her being his friend’s wife. When he found out she was attending in his best friend’s house party, he couldn’t stay away any longer. During that time, he renewed their friendship, but he doesn’t seriously consider pursuing her as a lover until they both return home to London. Because she still loves her husband, it takes a little work for Daniel to get past her defenses, but the payoff is worth it. However, once he does, he ends up feeling much stronger emotions toward her than he expected. Daniel is one of those heroes who projects the air of an unrepentant rogue on the outside to cover up for a traumatic event from his past that makes him feel unworthy. He has also developed the endearing habit of taking in strays of all kinds, both human and animal. He finds a sense of purpose in helping others, although this is a side of himself that he hides from public view. Best of all, he’s a dream lover who knows just the right things to say and do to bring out Carolyn’s more passionate, daring side. Daniel was simply an all-around wonderful hero who I ended up loving.
Romances don’t get much more perfect for me than this one. I loved everything about both the hero and heroine. Their story is, at times, light-hearted, but at the same time, contains emotional depth. The light mystery in the background adds a little intrigue. Then there’s the utterly beautiful relationship between Daniel and Carolyn. They were absolutely perfect for one another in every way. The love scenes are deeply emotional and sensual, just the way I like them. I felt the connection between these two right from the start and it only got stronger as the story progressed. I can’t think of a single thing I would have changed about it. That’s why I’m naming Jacquie D’Alessandro’s Confessions at Midnight as my February Book of the Month. If you enjoy historical romance filled with emotion, a touch of intrigue, a few humorous moments, and deeply sensual love scenes, then you should definitely give this book a try.
