My book of the month selection for June is the sixth volume in a phenomenally successful and widely loved epic romantic series that spans decades and even eras of time given its time travel aspect. This particular book – like all the others in the series – is a very lengthy tome. At nearly a thousand pages in hardcover it’s big enough to use as a doorstop, and it took me over three weeks to read it. (Have I mentioned that I’m a slow reader?) Yet it never felt long at all, and I was still sorry to see it come to an end. With kidnappings, rape, two murder mysteries, other mysteries surrounding a missing slave, missing gold, and the identity of who fathered a young woman’s baby, as well as political intrigue as the War for Independence gets under way, there’s never a dull moment. Not to mention there’s lots of character development for our main characters as well as tons of romantic entanglements, as well as the culmination of a plot point that began two books back. There was just so much going on in this book that I was never bored for even a moment, and I loved every minute (despite it being quite a lot of minutes:-)) that I spent reading it.
When I say how much I love Jamie and Claire, everyone will know what series I’m talking about. This couple has been beloved icons of the romance world for going on two decades and I simply can’t get enough of their story. They’re just so inspiring as a couple, it’s impossible not to love them. They’re always selflessly looking out for those they love, including each other, and they’ve been together so long and been through so much that nothing and no one is ever going to tear them apart. They’ve been through many storms in their lives and must weather through a few more in this book, but through it all and no matter what they have to deal with, Jamie and Claire are each other’s rock. They believe in each other and love each other so much that they would do anything to be together and keep each other safe and secure. I’ve adored them since I read the first book of the series thirteen years ago, and they’re still at the top of my all-time favorite romance couples list.
At this point in the series, they share a lot of page time with their daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger, who deal with some issues of their own in this volume. As one of the few Protestants on Fraser’s Ridge, Roger is called upon to help a newly-arrived group of Scottish Presbyterians, and in doing so, finally discovers his life’s calling. In the meantime, Bree puts her technical mind to work finding ways to make their lives easier by using ancient methods to produce more modern inventions, while finding fulfillment in motherhood and the occasional artistic endeavor. Their lives seem content, but over it all hangs the spectre of the man who raped her and question about the biological father of her son, Jem. Then she comes face-to-face with her attacker again, finally finding closure. But an unfortunate circumstance arises, requiring a tough decision to made and an unexpected course alteration for their lives.
There’s just so much to love about this series and this book in particular. For one, the author never fails to astound me with her extensive research and attention to detail that makes me feel like I’m a part of whatever major events are happening at that time, as well as a part of the setting. I find all the scientific and medical elements captivating. I was equally fascinated with the religious facets as well. I thoroughly enjoyed all the numerous romantic entanglements and relationship building that takes place. The mystery elements are woven seamlessly into the narrative, with each one having unexpected effects on other parts of the story. There are lots of little story threads, some of which have been hanging loose for a couple of books, that are finally wrapped up neatly as well. Like I said before, there’s a great deal that happens in this volume and it was all thoroughly engaging. That’s why I’m naming Diana Gabaldon’s A Breath of Snow and Ashes as my June Book of the Month. If you enjoy historical fiction wrapped up with epic romance, mystery, and a touch of the paranormal, then you should definitely give this book a try.
