May 2017 Book of the Month Giveaway

May was an OK reading month for me. I had a couple of duds, but most of what I read was still good. However, I didn’t have any five-star romance reads, and since I only give away what I feel is the best of the best, I don’t have a romance to offer this month. My favorite five-star read from May was a non-fiction book centering around animal rescue. Since my Loving Hearts series also has an animal rescue theme, I thought it fully appropriate to name it my latest book of the month, and if you’re an animal lover like me, you may enjoy it just as much as I did.
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans back in 2005, she left massive devastation in her wake. It wasn’t just the human population that was affected, though. It’s estimated that 100,000 to 250,000 animals were also displaced. The problem was made even worse by the fact that most people were not allowed to take their furry, feathered, and scaled friends with them when they evacuated. That left all these animals to fend for themselves. Many died in the hurricane and resulting flood waters, while those who didn’t were either locked inside houses and garages for weeks on end until rescuers were able to reach them or they were simply left wandering the deserted streets not knowing what had become of their humans.
Into this devastation came Best Friends Animal Society, one of the largest and best organized animal rescue groups to set up operations in the area. They partnered with local groups, and together with them and dozens of volunteers who left their jobs and lives to travel across the country to help, they were able to save around 10,000 animals’ lives. About fifteen percent of those animals were reunited with their families, while the others were fostered and eventually adopted out into loving forever homes. The book I’ve chosen documents these efforts through detailed accounts of specific animals’ stories, as well as the bravery and compassion of the volunteers. By turns both heartbreaking and heartwarming, it captures the indomitable spirit of both the rescuers and the rescued. That’s why I’m naming Cathy Scott’s Pawprints of Katrina as my May Book of the Month. If you’re an animal lover who enjoys stories of rescues that tug at your heartstrings, then you should definitely give this book a try. Keep reading to learn how you can win a copy for your own library.
