November 2018 Book of the Month Giveaway

I had just one five-star read in November. It was a re-read of an old favorite that’s the second book in a popular young adult series that stirred up a ton of hype about a decade or so ago, when I read it for the first time. Since then, a lot of that hype has died down, but I still love these books and I’m having fun rediscovering them. I’ve enjoyed reading the first two books again, and I look forward to re-reading the rest in 2019.

When I say Edward and Bella, everyone is sure to know which series I’m talking about.:-) I recall that when I read these books for the first time, I was enthralled by their epic love story. But in this second volume, they spend much of it apart. After an innocent birthday celebration leads to a minor accident that in turn causes a life-threatening situation for Bella, Edward decides that the best course of action to keep her safe is to take himself out of her life. This leaves Bella depressed, demoralized, and having difficulty moving on with life, until she discovers a new friendship and a rebellious purpose with Native American teen and friend of the family, Jacob Black. But Jacob has some secrets of his own, and he and a “gang” of teens from the reservation may prove equally as dangerous as Edward.

I really came to love all the characters in this series. Although I might have wished that Bella would have had a little more faith in Edward's love for her, I still related to her pretty well. In this story, she moves from awkward clumsiness to thrill-seeking danger magnet. She still has a kind, caring side, always looking out for others, although it might have been nice if she’d looked out for her own well-being more. I’ve always been team Edward, so I understood the difficult choice he made in this book even though his absence left a huge hole. Then there’s Jacob, for whom I think I may have developed an even greater fondness this second time around. He truly is a wonderful young man who offers his friendship to Bella when she needs it the most and who’s equally as protective of her as Edward.

Despite having serious and sometimes depressing overtones, I still very much enjoyed this story. It moves fluidly from an explosive beginning, to heavy sorrow, to newfound friendship and peace. Then it makes its way back to danger and suspense as Bella and Alice race to save Edward from a fateful decision and we’re introduced to the menacing Volturi. It all made for some enjoyable reading, parts of which were even better the second time. That’s why I’m naming Stephenie Meyer’s New Moon as my November Book of the Month. Perhaps you’ve read your own copy ragged, or perhaps you’re one of the few readers who hasn’t yet discovered the fun of the Twilight series. If so and if you enjoy young adult paranormal romance with a heart-stopping love story, friendships, family bonds, and teen angst, then you should definitely give this book a try.
