October 2014 Book of the Month & Giveaway

I only want to pass along recommendations and do giveaways for the very best of the best from my reading, so I only plan to name books to which I personally gave five stars as Book of the Month. Since I had no five star reads in September, I didn't do a giveaway for that month. Now I'm back from my little hiatus to name a new Book of the Month for October.

This month's choice is the final volume in an exciting and extremely popular young adult series set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world in which kids are forced to take part in a gladiator-style fight to the death. Yes, I'm talking about The Hunger Games. But in this book, the arena has become the entire country of Panem, whose people have risen up against its unjust leadership, sparking a revolution. Their greatest symbol of hope and courage is none other than the Mockingjay herself, Katniss Everdeen. Our intrepid heroine must fight her own battles against the demons that plague her mind, as well as against those who might not be undertaking the war for the purest of reasons. Never quite sure who can be trusted, she finds herself longing for the simplicity of her relationship with Peeta, but before she can rekindle that alliance, she must find a way to save him from the clutches of the enemy. It's the most grueling and violent “game” she's ever played, and in the end, the stakes may be too high to bear. But through all her trials and turmoil, Katniss is still, IMHO, one of the most compelling and inspiring female characters to ever grace the pages of a novel. That's why I'm naming Suzanne Collins' Mockingjay as my October Book of the Month. It's an emotionally powerful, tearjerker ending to an amazing series, and I'm giving it away just in time for the release of Part 1 of the movie on November 21, 2014. If you enjoy YA science fiction and haven't read this wonderful book yet, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Keep reading to learn how you can win a copy for your own library.

Mockingjay Book Cover My name is Katniss Everdeen.
Why am I not dead?
I should be dead.

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.

It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans--except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay--no matter what the personal cost.
